2021 | Breaking the Chains
2021 celebration carries the theme “Breaking the Chains” and includes reflections on the challenges of the last year, the ongoing struggle for equity and harmony, and the hope and promise of coming together for a brighter future for our communities.
In a time when illness runs rampant, oppression threatens and democracy is challenged, we are breaking the chains. The chains of hypocrisy, injustice, and a narrative that tells us tomorrow has no promise, that our efforts are fruitless, our hopes and dreams for naught. They are old chains, and strong. Yet what binds us is stronger still: the vision of the great Dr. King, who devoted his life — and gave his life — to the cause of breaking the chains.

Land Acknowledgment
Breaking the Chains: Embracing First Nations Though together virtually, we are all tied to a land whose rich history far predates our contemporary notions of statehood. As you navigate this virtual program, please remember and honor the indigenous peoples and communities whose homelands we now call Brown County. |

Welcome
Breaking the Chains by Coming Together For 26 years, we have gathered together to celebrate the life and legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For 26 years, bit by bit, we have chipped away at the chains that bind our nation, our communities, our neighborhoods. Sometimes those chains seem stronger than ever. But together, we are stronger than our chains. Listen as these community leaders share their thoughts about unity, harmony, and the power we have when we act as one. |

Committee Statement Breaking the Chains: Together in Spirit Hear from Juliet Cole, the longest-serving member of the Brown County MLK Committee, as she describes the committee’s stance on some of the very real challenges that continue to plague our communities. We have seen the potential for progress, but we must remain ever vigilant. |

Pegasis Performance Breaking the Chains and Lifting Our Voices Music has the power to bond, to inspire, to heal. It has long been an integral part of the Brown County MLK program, and that is no different this year, no matter the physical distance between us. After last year’s stirring rendition of “Wade in the Water,” local group Pegasis is back with a powerful original song of unity and hope. |

I Have a Dream Breaking the Chains: We ALL Have a Dream The words of Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech never fail to ignite the spirit and stir the soul. Once again, we have invited young people from our area to read these cherished words, which remain as relevant today as they were nearly six decades ago. We dream as one. |
